Icon "Saint Venerable Eugene"

Icon «Saint Monk Eugene»

Saint Venerable Eugene is depicted full-length as a grey-bearded elder in long monastic robes against a high cloudy sky and a landscape with a quiet shimmering river and a village in the distance. He stands with his hands clasped on his chest in a gesture of heartfelt prayer. The stern and focused expression on St. Eugene's face reveals the great wisdom of a man who has traversed a long path of strict ascetic life.

The name Eugene (Greek - noble) is shared by several Orthodox saints. Among them, the most famous is Eugene Aitolian (1595–1682). According to his hagiography, he was born in the village of Megalo Dendro in Aitolia (a region in Central Greece). In his youth, due to the cruelty of his stepmother, he left home and found refuge in the Vlochos Monastery, where he was raised by Hieromonk Arsenios. Together with him, Eugene traveled to Mount Athos, where he was ordained a deacon in one of the monasteries. In 1619, he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and in the city of Alexandria received the priesthood from Patriarch Cyril Lucaris (1572–1638).

This icon is a unique monument of Ukrainian church art from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, belonging to the renowned icon-painting school of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

The work is executed in the style of Ukrainian church modernism. This is evident in the soft lyrical landscape, the special luminosity of the color palette, and the subtle psychological depth of the saint's face. The work was created during the heyday of the Lavra workshops under the creative guidance of the outstanding artist Ivan Sidorovych Yizhakevych. This style is characterized by a combination of academic mastery with living national tradition. The filigree rendering of the monastic robes' folds and the delicate transmission of celestial radiance attest to the author's highest professional skill.

As an authentic example of the Lavra's painting style from the specified period, the icon holds museum and antique value. It is a desirable object for private collections of sacred art.

The noble palette and monumentality of the image allow the icon to become the ideological center of a study, library, or home chapel. It brings an atmosphere of historical depth and nobility to the space.

This is an exceptional gift for a person named Eugene, or for anyone who values Ukrainian cultural heritage. Such an icon is a relic that carries the blessing of the Kyiv-Pechersk shrine and becomes a family treasure.
