The book "Kyiv: Historical, Topographical, Archaeological, and Ethnographic"

The book «Kyiv: Historical, Topographical, Archaeological and Ethnographic»

This publication is a fundamental work by the prominent Ukrainian encyclopedist, the first rector of St. Volodymyr University — Mykhailo Oleksandrovych Maksymovych. As one of the founders of Ukrainian historical topography, the author laid the foundations for the scientific study of Kyiv as a sacred and state center of Rus'.

The book is a profound synthetic study, where the original landscape and development of the city are recreated through the prism of chronicle tradition and archaeological finds. Maksymovych meticulously analyzes the topography of key historical areas: Old Kyiv Hill, Shchekavytsia, Kyselivka, Podil, and Pechersk. Sections dedicated to chronicle-mentioned tracts and the history of the Mezhyhirya Transfiguration Monastery — a spiritual stronghold of Ukrainian Cossacks and the princely era — hold particular scientific significance.

The publication covers the Kyiv and Volyn princely periods, presenting unique comparisons of ancient geography with contemporary (19th century) finds. The ethnographic component, which includes descriptions of folk legends, daily life, and ancient artifacts, transforms this work into an invaluable source on the history of Ukrainian identity.

A 19th-century rarity, valuable for Ukrainian collectors, Kyiv researchers, and admirers of ancient manuscript and topographic studies. Rarely found in antique circulation.

Exclusive handcrafted custom binding: made of natural high-quality leather with special tanning, ensuring durability and aesthetic perfection, employing a complex combination of multi-level blind embossing and hot foil stamping.

The book contains reproductions of rare engravings, lithographs, and rare historical plan-schemes of Kyiv. Special attention is paid to the detailing of cartographic materials, which allows for the study of the city's microtoponymy in its original form.

The presented copy is a rare example of book art. Thanks to the combination of Mykhailo Maksymovych's scientific heritage and a high level of printing execution, the publication has exceptional antique and collector's value. The work is extremely rare in free circulation and is an object of high demand among historians, bibliophiles, and connoisseurs of Ukrainian antiquities.
